Preparing Your Interior Walls for Painting

A flawless paint finish starts long before the brush hits the wall. Proper preparation is the most crucial step in any interior painting project. Before you even think about choosing a colour, you need to ensure the surface is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Skip this phase, and you'll likely end up with peeling, bubbling, or uneven paint that will require expensive rework.

The first step is to clear the room and cover everything that remains. Move furniture to the centre and drape it with drop cloths. Use painter's tape to protect baseboards, door frames, and window sills. Then, conduct a thorough inspection. Look for any cracks, holes, or dents in the plasterboard. These need to be filled with a quality filler, allowed to dry, and sanded down until they are perfectly flush with the surrounding wall.

Next, wash down all surfaces with a mild detergent solution to remove dust, grease, and any lingering dirt. This is particularly important in kitchens and hallways where airborne oils can cause paint to separate. Once the walls are dry, spot-prime any areas where you've applied filler or where there are stains from water damage or markers. A good primer seals the substrate and gives the topcoat something to properly bond to.

After the priming coat dries, it's time for a final sand with a fine-grit sandpaper. This creates a smooth key for your paint. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth, and you are finally ready to begin painting. Remember, spending a little extra time on preparation is the secret to a professional-looking finish that will last for years.
